Join us for the 2011 African-American Read-In!
In February of next year the UMKC University Libraries will be celebrating Black History Month 2011 by joining over a million readers in the 22nd National African American Read-In. You are invited to participate as a sharer and as a listener as we celebrate the many literary and cultural contributions of African Americans.
Miller Nichols Library will host two Read-In Celebrations in the newly renovated performance space on the first floor:
- Tuesday, Feb 8th noon-1:30pm
- Wednesday, Feb 23rd 3-4:30pm
Everyone is welcome to come listen to presentations inspired by the work of an on African American author. In addition, there will be exhibits related to Black History Month on the Ground and First floors of Miller Nichols Library.
Seating is limited at the Read-Ins, so please register at https://www.umkcreadin.ezregister.com. Feel free to register for both sessions– the February 8th session as a listener only and the February 23rd session as either a sharer or listener!
If you would like to be a “sharer” there are open presentation slots on the 23rd (to request a slot, please register by December 3). You will be asked to simply provide an overview of a book authored by an African American writer that you really enjoyed reading. We encourage you to be creative in your sharing by reading an excerpt aloud, sharing a poem, or performing a dramatic and/or musical enactment related to the book. A reading list of all the books shared will be compiled and distributed to all participants.
The National African American Read-In is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English, the NCTE Black Caucus, and is endorsed by the International Reading Association. Since 1990, readers of all ethnic groups, from 49 states, the West Indies, and African countries have participated. The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities.
