With so much cramming we’re all doing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, or to overload our minds and end up in a daze! Taking regular study breaks can make the time you do spend studying so much more effective! APC is sponsoring several events throughout the next couple of days to help you take a break from studying and relax your mind.

Tuesday, December 7 at 7:00 in the Student Union Theatre, they will be showing the movie “Takers.” Join them for the movie and for free food!

Wednesday, December 8 at 7:00 in the Student Union Coffeehouse, they will be sponsoring an after-game party giving you the chance to relax, hang out with your friends, and talk about the game!

Thursday, December 9 at 7:00 in the University Center Cafeteria, they will be sponsoring the Late Night Breakfast. In the past, it has been at midnight, so take note! This year, it starts at 7 and ends at midnight! All you need is your student ID.

UMKC’s campus holds many different ways to relax and work through the stress of finals. Besides the APC special study events, there are places on campus specially dedicated to your physical and emotional well-being not only during finals but throughout the entire semester.

Swinney Recreation Center provides a place to work through stress, clear your mind, and push yourself physically. No matter what physical shape you are in or what your workout routine may be, there’s something here for everyone! Among the features offered are basketball court and track, handball, squash, and raquetball courts, steamroom, sauna, and swimming pool, and a fitness center complete with everything you need for your workout. For specific hours and a complete list of the services they offer, visit their website. If you are on Hospital Hill campus, check out the Swinney Annex, located at 25th and Campbell St.

The Mind Body Connection offers a relaxation station, featuring a massage chair, relaxation recordings, and a place for prayer and meditation. It also hosts Wii hours of the day (2-5pm Monday- Thursday) where you can use Wii sports, Wii play, and Wii fit to get your body moving and also have some fun! Visit them in the University Center room 161 anytime between 11am-5pm Monday- Friday.

This entry has been taken from the Counseling Center’s blog, Shrink Rap.

If you’re a student, December means more than upcoming holiday fun with family and friends. It means crunch time, with looming final exams and due dates for final projects and papers that are coming fast. These stressors can be overwhelming, leaving many students feeling anxious or depressed.

During this vulnerable time, it is critical students take steps toward a healthy holiday. One of these steps is to do a mood check by taking a quick, free, anonymous online screening.

University of Missouri- Kansas City is offering these screenings, which can be accessed by visiting www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/MISSOURI. These screenings will help students determine if the stress they are feeling is a sign of something more, such as a common but under-diagnosed mood disorder, and how to get help if needed. The screenings are so quick to complete that they won’t add to your already hectic schedule.
