The Bridge to College program is for students with disabilities who would like to go to college and/or explore career options. We offer this FREE program annually for students to explore options for college and careers. The Bridge to College series will offer students the chance to experience a college campus while participating in the college environment and college course structure.
This program will have an underlying theme of self-determination.Read more
Self-determination refers to the characteristics of a person that leads them to make choices and decisions based on their own preferences and interests, to monitor and regulate their own actions and to be goal-oriented and self-directing. -National Gateway to Self Determination www.ngsd.org
Throughout this course, students will come to campus once a week, email instructors, and participate in class discussions. There will be a number of guest speakers, instructor lectures, and classroom activities based around college and career choices. By the end of the program, students will prepare and present a Person-Centered Plan. The Person-Centered Plan will detail student goals and illuminate a path to achieve them through the next phase of their lives.
The series will explore questions such as:
- What career should I choose?
- What qualifications do I need for a career I want?
- Should I go to college?
- How do I pick a college?
- What to expect when I get on campus?
- How do I pay for college?
- How do I manage my time?
- How do I handle stress?
- What do I need to work on to reach my goals?
The design of this program is to fill common gaps and answer questions many students have as they transition from a high school curriculum to a post-secondary education or a career. Some sessions will also include parental involvement. Parents will have the opportunity to speak with our parental support team, as well as be involved in the classroom discussions around “How do I pay for College”, and “Should I go to College.”
