University of Missouri-Kansas City launches Zipcar car-sharing program on campus

UMKC partners with Rockhurst to offer program to students on both campuses

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and Rockhurst University have launched a new partnership with Zipcar, Inc., providing both campuses with combined access to the world’s leading car-sharing network. The cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all UMKC and Rockhurst students, faculty, and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over.

This year, UMKC and Rockhurst University members can join for $25, with rates on campus Zipcar vehicles starting as low as $7 per hour and $66 per day. Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days. To join, visit www.zipcar.com/umkc or www.zipcar.com/rockhurst.

UMKC and Rockhurst University members will have access to two Zipcar vehicles, including a Ford Focus and Toyota Prius, which will be located on the north side of the University Center (future Student Success Center) on the UMKC campus. Zipcars are self service and can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day.

“We believe the Zipcar program will be a perfect complement to UMKC’s growing mission as a leader in promoting sustainability initiatives in the community,” said Robert Simmons, Associate Vice Chancellor of Administration at UMKC. “With the great success and popularity of UMKC’s student bus pass program and campus bike-share program, the addition of Zipcar is a logical next step in UMKC’s mission to lead the way in exploring and implementing innovative and effective environmentally friendly programs to benefit our students, our community and our planet.”

“We see Zipcar as a great opportunity to bridge the two university communities while helping reduce our carbon footprint,” said Matt Heinrich, Associate Vice President for Facilities & Technology at Rockhurst University. “We’re pleased to introduce Zipcar as a complementary environmental solution to those that exist on campus that will encourage carpooling within the campus community and offer relief to parking congestion on neighboring city streets.”

Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may download the Zipcar mobile applications to make reservations, lock and unlock the vehicles as well as honk the horn to help locate the vehicle. Members can also use Zipcar’s “Reserve a Zipcar” app on Facebook to view available Zipcars and make, extend or cancel a reservation all from their Facebook account. Reservations can also be made over the phone or by using the Zipcar website.

“We are thrilled to welcome the UMKC and Rockhurst University communities to the Zipcar University program, and are excited to help both universities offer cost-effective, convenient and sustainable transportation options for students, faculty and staff,” said Michael Serafino, general manager, Zipcar Universities. “Zipcar is an environmentally friendly transportation alternative, and it’s been proven that each car shared removes at least 15 privately owned vehicles from the road, thereby cutting down on emissions and congestion.”

Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 250 universities, including Creighton University. For more information, including how to become a member of Zipcar at UMKC or Rockhurst University, please visit www.zipcar.com/umkc or www.zipcar.com/rockhurst.
