Missouri Senator Jolie Justus to recognize library Oct. 2
Since opening in 1969, the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s (UMKC) Miller Nichols Library has transitioned from card catalogs and typewriters to librarians who assist students via text message and a robot that will retrieve books. At 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 Miller Nichols Library will reflect on its past and look to the future as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. The reception will take place in the Miller Nichols Library Information Commons, 800 E. 51st. St., Kansas City, Mo.
Missouri Senator Jolie Justus will present an official state proclamation recognizing the library’s 40 years of service to UMKC and the community. Chancellor Leo Morton, University Libraries Dean Sharon Bostick and Friends of the Library President Oliver Burnette also are scheduled to speak.
A LaBudde Special Collections photo exhibit of the Miller Nichols Library building’s past will be on display at the reception and through the end of 2009. A similar exhibit can be viewed at http://library.umkc.edu/spec-col/mnl-building/beginnings.htm.
“For 40 years, Miller Nichols Library has served as a central hub of learning for UMKC and the surrounding community,” said Dean Sharon Bostick. “We want to celebrate that past and look ahead to a library that offers cutting-edge technology, public service-focused librarians, internationally-renowned collections and extensive resources that are accessible to anyone, anytime and from anywhere.”
To further commemorate the University Libraries’ past, present and future, University Libraries is hosting a “Libraries Inside/Out” lecture series. Through six lunchtime presentations, UMKC librarians will share how libraries are transforming from dark, stuffy book vaults into light, lively and online learning communities. The following sessions will be held in Rm. 121 of Miller Nichols Library:

October 21, 12 p.m. – “Information Commons: Changing Needs, Changing Services,” presented by Gloria Tibbs, Reference Librarian and Diane Hunter, Head of Reference
October 28, 12 p.m. – “Clinical Medical Librarian Program: Morning Rounds and Medical Education,” presented by Amrita Burdick and Susan Sanders, Clinical Medical Librarians
November 3, 12:30 p.m. – “Accessing Hidden Collections: Adventures in Research,” presented by Sandy Rodriguez, Special Project Cataloger
November 11, 12 p.m. – “Music/Media Libraries: Full ‘Stream’ Ahead,” presented by Laura Gayle Green, Head of the Music/Media Library
November 17, 12:30 p.m. – “Special Collections: The Future of the Past,” presented by Stuart Hinds, Head of Special Collections
Miller Nichols Library, located on UMKC’s Volker campus, is the university’s largest library and houses the general collection, Music/Media Library, LaBudde Special Collections and Marr Sound Archives. On UMKC’s Health Sciences campus, the Dental Library and Health Sciences Library serve students and researchers in those disciplines. Along with its partners ¨C the UMKC School of Law’s Leon E.
