UMKC Women’s Center to Celebrate 40th Anniversary

The Center will host events in 2011-12 to recognize this milestone

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Founded in 1971, the University of Missouri-Kansas City‘s (UMKC) Women’s Center is one of the oldest campus-based women’s centers in the U.S. and the second oldest in the Midwest. To celebrate its 40th Anniversary, the Women’s Center will host major events in November 2011 and April 2012, with smaller events planned for October 2011, February 2012 and March 2012.

The events for October, February and March are still in the planning stages. More information will be available on the Women’s Center website as plans develop: www.umkc.edu/womenc.

The Center will host the dedication of a quilt created by local textile artist NedRa Bonds in honor of the 40th Anniversary at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, 1601 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo. The quilt is composed of squares completed by UMKC students, faculty, staff and Kansas City community members. Each square was created in response to Bonds’ definition of quilting: “meeting and learning from each other, being together, talking, laughing, dancing, and sharing can only lead to good things.”

The second major event will be a fundraiser – featuring Kansas City’s Barclay Martin Ensemble – held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the River Market Event Place, 140 Walnut St. The band will premiere a song commissioned for the anniversary. Individual tickets will be priced at $65, with sponsorships ranging from $115 to $5,000 also available. Tickets and sponsorships will go on sale in September 2011.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 15,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
