UMKC Women’s Center, in collaboration with GAME presents “Activism for Human Rights: From Issues to Action”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Women’s Center and the Global and Multicultural Education Center (GAME) are proud to present the Sixth Biennial Kansas City Conference on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

The theme for the 2010 conference is “Activism for Human Rights: From Issues to Action.” The conference will be held 6-10 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 220 West 43rd Street, Kansas City, Mo.

“The UMKC Women’s Center and GAME are proud to bring the 2010 Activism for Human Rights conference to Kansas City,” said Brenda Bethman, Ph.D., director, UMKC Women’s Center. “This year’s conference focuses on the interplay between the global and the local and showcases the significant impact that local Kansas City organizations are having on human rights locally and globally.”

Agenda items for the conference include:

Thursday, Oct. 14

Theresa Garza Ruiz, Jackson County Legislature, will open the conference.

Kansas City musician Barclay Martin will present the film made in collaboration with the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging: “Zamboanga: Poverty, War, Music.”

Friday, Oct. 15

Keynote speakers will be Jolie Justus, Missouri State Senator, and Elizabeth Alex, News Anchor, KSHB-TV.

Panels on Immigration, Children and Poverty and Human Trafficking will be held in the morning. Afternoon sessions include “Taking Action with Social Media,” “How to be a Fair Trade Activist,” and “Advocating for Women and Girls.”
