UMKC Starr Symposium presents

Event features nationally-recognized feminist speakers

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Four diverse authors – representing women from Generation Y to pre-Baby Boomers – will discuss work and life choices as part of this inaugural event at the UMKC Starr Symposium. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at University Academy, 6801 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Mo.

The free event is hosted by the UMKC Women’s Center and the UMKC Women’s Council. Tickets are required and can be reserved online at Starr Kickoff Conversation.

The nationally-recognized speakers – known as “Women Girls Ladies” – are:

Gloria Feldt – author, commentator and speaker. An expert in women’s rights, health, politics, media and leadership where the personal meets the political, she was a teen mom whose passion for reproductive justice led her to a 30-year career with Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Courtney E. Martin – writer, teacher and speaker living in Brooklyn. This fall, Beacon Press will publish her next book, “Do It Anyway: The New Generation of Activists,” in which Courtney profiles eight people under 35 trying to make change.

Deborah Siegel, Ph.D. – expert on gender, politics and the unfinished business of feminism across generations. She is the author of “Sisterhood, Interrupted: From Radical Women to Grrls Gone Wild” and co-editor of the literary anthology “Only Child: Writers on the Singular Joys and Solitary Sorrows of Growing Up Solo.”

Kristal Brent Zook, Ph.D. – born in Los Angeles and raised in an all-female household by her African American mother and grandmother. Her father is Anglo American. Her most recent book, “I See Black People: The Rise and Fall of African American-Owned Television and Radio,” was published by Nation Books in February 2008.

Four additional community conversations will take place at 5:45 – 7 p.m. in November, February, March and April, featuring panel members from the Kansas City area.
