UMKC School of Medicine celebrates 40 years of advancing the health of our community

Highlights include celebratory events for alumni; awarding of Chancellor’s Medal to Medical School founder

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine kicks off its 40th Anniversary celebration this week with a series of events for alumni, including the annual UMKC Alumni Awards luncheon and presentation on April 27, where School of Medicine founder E. Grey Dimond, M.D., received the UMKC Chancellor’s Medal, the University’s highest non-academic honor. Also honored at the luncheon was Mamta Reddy, M.D., the School of Medicine’s 2011 Alumna of the Year.

On April 29, the School of Medicine will host an Alumni Day at the Hospital Hill campus, which will include a poster session and tours of the Medical School and the campus, followed by a private reception that evening. The following evening, on April 30, a special 40th Anniversary kickoff event is being held at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center Hotel. Among the highlights of the evening will be a video produced by the School of Medicine Class of 1977 alumni group — the first graduating class to have matriculated through the school’s six-year combined degree program.

Since its opening in 1971, nearly 2,900 physicians across the United States and beyond have received their medical degrees from the UMKC School of Medicine. Almost 45 percent of them remain in or near Missouri to provide health care to citizens of the state and areas contiguous to Kansas City and St. Louis. With the accomplishments of its leaders and a roster of alumni practicing throughout the U.S., the UMKC School of Medicine, after 40 years, continues to enrich a reputation for innovative, effective medical education that has prepared it and its graduates for the 21st century.

“For 40 years, the UMKC School of Medicine has filled a unique role of preparing highly successful physicians and researchers to serve our community and our state,” said Betty M. Drees, M.D., dean of the School of Medicine. “We look forward to continuing and building on that tradition for many years to come.”
