UMKC School of Dentistry to host 10th annual ‘fundrazor’ to help young cancer patients

Proceeds from ‘Shear Madness’ event will help area kids attend Camp Quality

Faculty, students and staff at the UMKC School of Dentistry are gearing up for the school’s annual Shear Madness event, which raises funds for children with cancer to attend Camp Quality, a non-profit organization that provides free camping experiences and year-round support programs for children with cancer and their families.

This year’s Shear Madness event will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 3, 2011 in Room 209 of the UMKC School of Dentistry, 650 E. 25th Street, KCMO 64108.

On the day of the Shear Madness event, students, faculty, and staff can set their price – on their hair, that is. Audience members are then urged to pledge money until the price is met. When the bidding stops, the buzzing begins.

Over the course of the past several months, students, faculty and staff have been working to raise money from friends, family and alumni. On the day of the Shear Madness event, anyone who wants to participate can set their price to have their heads shaved. Those individuals who raised money before the event can then use it to bid on the fate of the participants’ hair. If the price is met, they have their head shaved. If not, they get to keep their hair (but the bidding money still goes into the fundraising pot).

Last year’s event raised more than $7000, which covered the costs for seven area children to attend Camp Quality over the summer. Click here to see a video clip from last year’s Shear Madness event.

Shear Madness is sponsored by Students Take Action (STA), which was founded in 1998 by a group of dental students dedicated to compassion and comradeship through community service. STA volunteers participate in a variety of volunteer activities throughout the year.
