Fans enjoyed summer temps, a winning soccer match

For the fifth year in a row, UMKC took over Children’s Mercy Park for UMKC Day with Sporting KC.

UMKC fans made their presence felt in a crowd of 19,028 to watch Sporting KC defeat the LA Galaxy, 2-1. Sporting KC now moves up in the standings and is in second place in the Western Conference of the MLS.

Pre-game activities hosted by UMKC’s Athletics and Admissions departments entertained soccer fans. UMKC ROTC presented the colors and UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance student David Sanchez sang the Star Spangled Banner. Chancellor Emeritus Leo E. Morton took the field with Student Government Association Administrative Vice President Allen Williams for the coin toss.

At halftime, four UMKC students participated in a scoring game with Sporting KC mascot Blue in one goal and Kasey in the other goal. Placed in two teams, the students tried to score goals against Kasey and Blue as they guarded the net. Each player received a bag of UMKC and Sporting KC gear for their participation.

UMKC Day at Sporting is a benefit of UMKC’s official Sporting KC sponsorship.
