Dept. of Art and Art History welcomes high school students Nov. 2
KANSAS CITY, MO. – Each semester, to help prepare high school students for higher education, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) College of Arts and Sciences‘ Department of Art and Art History welcomes students through urban education intermediary PREP-KC. At 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, students from J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City, Kan., will visit the UMKC Fine Arts Building, 5015 Holmes St., Kansas City, Mo.
In the Department of Art & Art History, students will visit classes, talk to UMKC students, meet professors and tour the UMKC Gallery of Art. Their visit will culminate in a hands-on art project in the photography lab led by a Guggenheim-winning artist and associate professor Elijah Gowin. Students also will tour the new Student Union, residence halls and other campus attractions.
PREP-KC was founded in 2005 by a circle of private funders and has become Kansas City’s leading urban education intermediary. Its mission is to increase college-readiness and access to high-quality employment for the more than 60,000 mostly low-income students served by six of Kansas City’s bi-state urban school districts. PREP-KC provides investors with independent and timely data on the impact of their investments, a commitment to stewardship of their funds and the opportunity to join together to focus resources on improving urban public education in the bi-state region. UMKC’s chancellor, Leo Morton, chairs the PREP-KC board of directors.
“PREP-KC is helping us make college a reality for our students,” said Tommy Herrera, principal of East High School. “Through our partnership with PREP-KC, our students have access to customized learning experiences on college campuses. These experiences are vital to our work to increase college-going for all of our students.”
“As the comments from the students visiting last year indicate, this experience was profound for many participants,” said Kati Toivanen, chair of the Dept. of Art and Art History. “It created attainable goals, set priorities and inspired students to work hard to realize these new dreams.”
