Program will feature some of nation’s preeminent experts on women’s health issues

KANSAS CITY, MO. — The UMKC School of Nursing hosts the 36th Annual Women’s Health Care Symposium in Kansas City this week, April 7-8, at the InterContinental Hotel on the Country Club Plaza. The Symposium is designed to provide women’s health care professionals with the latest clinical information, enabling them to improve the quality of care for women. Along with the School of Nursing, the symposium is co-hosted by Development Systems Inc.

Among the topics being covered at this year’s Symposium:

• Counseling alternatives and strategies to provide best care for women with unintended pregnancy.
• The advantages and disadvantages of HPV vaccination in the U.S.
• The major components of health care reform likely to impact publicly funded family planning providers.
• The consequences of inadequate sleep on women’s health.
• Successful strategies for implementing Reproductive Life Planning services.
• Trends regarding young adult reproductive health, contraception use and knowledge of reproductive health.

The symposium features a distinguished roster of expert presenters covering a variety of clinically relevant topics, including a special post-Symposium reception and presentation at the Guadalupe Center on Friday, April 8, featuring Linda Dominguez, a nationally renowned speaker on women’s health issues. Dominguez’s presentation — Mantillas y Rebozos: Hispanic Women’s Views on Sexuality — is designed to encourage participants to look beyond their preconceived notions when considering Hispanic women’s views on sexuality. Dominguez incorporates art and poetry in her discussion of the factors that have helped to shape Hispanic women’s views toward sexuality including history, culture and religion.
