UMKC names Rolla student as Honor Recipient

Chosen for outstanding academic and service involvement

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management has selected five graduating seniors as Fall 2011 Vice Chancellor Honor Recipients. Among them is Emma Frank of Rolla, Mo., who was commended for both scholarship and participation in programs outside the classroom.

A UMKC Curator’s Scholar, Frank also received a Missouri Bright Flight Scholarship. As a chemistry student in the College of Arts and Sciences, she drew the admiration of department chair Kathleen Kilway for her focus and maturity.

“Emma has great interpersonal skills and excels in the classroom. She will do well in any medical program,” Kilway said. “She was one of the first students to offer her services as a peer tutor in Organic Chemistry.”

With plans to attend medical school, Frank shadowed practitioners in family medicine, obstetrics, gynecology and pathology. She worked as a forensic technician for the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office – first as a volunteer and then an employee – and also volunteered to sort medical records for the Kansas City Free Health Clinic, which serves many AIDS patients. During her senior year, Frank was chosen for UMKC’s Mock Trial team, representing UMKC at tournaments around the country.

The Vice Chancellor Honor Recipients program was established in 1975 to recognize seniors who excelled in academic achievement, involvement in university programs and service to the campus and surrounding community.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 15,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UMKC engages with the community and economy based on a four-part mission: life and health sciences; visual and performing arts; urban issues and education; and a vibrant learning and campus life experience.
