Volker Quad is party central

Returning alumni of the University of Missouri-Kansas City will be welcomed with a spate of campus activities at the 2012 Homecoming during the first week of October, as kickoff events for celebrating UMKC’s 80th year.

Highlights of the week’s activities include a block party, two student talent shows, a student/alumni career expo, and a free lunch for students, faculty, staff and alumni on both the Volker and Hospital Hill campuses.

Topping it all off: the unveiling of a new line of “Classic Roo” apparel and accessories featuring an updated version of the Kangaroo mascot character originally drawn by Walt Disney in the 1930s. Items from the new line will be available for purchase and will be shown off in a celebrity fashion show. Models will include Board of Trustees Chair Tom Bloch, Athletics Director Tim Hall, Deans Lora Lacey-Haun of the School of Nursing and Russell Melchert of the School of Pharmacy, Gus and Audrey Erdman, children of Curator Warren and Jenny Erdman, and Chancellor Leo Morton.

Things get underway on Monday October 1 with special student activities, including a free showing of the hit superhero movie “The Avengers” at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.

The entertainment scene shifts on Wednesday October 3 to Jazzman’s Coffee House Stage. Jazzman’s, in the Student Union, invites all comers to belt out their best karaoke over the lunch hour. On a more serious note, additional Wednesday activities will include a Blood Drive on the Quad from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and a Career Expo for students and alumni in Swinney Recreation Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Activity and Program Council is sponsoring a night of fun and entertainment on National Students Day, Thursday October 4. Talented Roos will take to the stage at the Student Union Theater at 7 p.m. for a Student Talent Show. The free Chancellor’s Lunch will be served on Hospital Hill from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friday October 5 offers a packed schedule, starting at the new Student Success Center, with a 10 a.m. dedication ceremony. The free Chancellor’s Lunch runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Volker Campus.

At 5:30 p.m., the Miller Nichols Library will play host to the Classic Roo fashion show and an exhibit of Roo-themed images from 80 years of history. This is your chance to decide for yourself if there is a family resemblance between Mickey Mouse and UMKC’s Kasey. Friday activities conclude with “The Comeback Greek Variety show” celebrating 60 years of Greek Life on campus, beginning at 8 p.m. in Room 401 of the Student Union.

Urban food trucks, bounce houses and mini courses are just a few of the offerings at the Saturday Oct. 6 Block Party set for 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Quad. Presiding over everything will be Kasey and the UMKC cheerleaders and dance team members, and a DJ will bring the noise.

Also on October 6, in the true Roo spirit, the UMKC Alumni Association will join with the National Kidney Foundation to sponsor their annual fundraising walk. Participants will follow a 2-mile route around the campus, beginning at the Quad on the Volker campus. For the spectators among you, check out the UMKC men’s soccer team going up against Oral Roberts at Durwood Stadium at 7 p.m.
