New leader will succeed David Donnelly
The search for a new dean for the UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management is now underway, and is set to meet the goal of selecting a new leader to begin work prior to the 2017-18 academic year.
The full search committee met for the first time Friday, Sept. 9, to receive its charge from Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara Bichelmeyer, and to begin organizing its work. The search will be supported by Witt/Kieffer, a nationally known higher education search firm. College of Arts and Sciences Dean Wayne Vaught and Deputy Provost Cynthia Pemberton will co-chair the search. The full list of committee members is below.
The committee is searching for a leader who, in the tradition of Henry Bloch, has a spirit of social entrepreneurship with experience and demonstrated competence as an innovator, and a commitment to delivering quality research, academic programming, and service. The future Dean will be expected to apply exemplary management skills while working across for-profit, non-profit and government sectors. The future Dean will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and the many constituents of the Bloch School to continue the transformation of the School of Management into a model public urban research enterprise that grows the academic knowledge base through discovery, teaching, service and engagement that meets the needs of individuals as well as the civic, workforce, and economic development needs of the Kansas City region.
The future Dean will continue the momentum of the Bloch School as one of UMKC’s fastest growing academic units and one of the country’s leaders in entrepreneurship and innovation education. Bloch is the only school of management in the region to be globally accredited through the AACSB for its business programs and through NASPAA for its public affairs programs.
In preparation for the search and to facilitate development of the leadership profile for the future Dean, Provost Bichelmeyer in recent months has conducted a survey of Bloch School faculty and staff, and met with numerous constituent groups. These include department chairs, center directors, the associate dean of the school, representatives of the faculty, staff, alumni advisory board, the Bloch Advisory Council, the school’s strategic planning committee, and representatives of the Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation, to receive input on the qualities that these groups value in their future Dean. The Provost will meet with students early in the fall semester.
The new Dean will succeed David Donnelly, who accepted the role in 2014 with the intention of returning after three years to full-time teaching in the Department of Accountancy at Bloch. Donnelly will continue on at Bloch and work with the Dean to ensure a smooth transition.
