TEDxUMKC Announces ‘Thinking Without a Box’ on March 5

Tickets on sale now

TEDxUMKC announces the speaker lineup for the 2017 TEDxUMKC event, “Thinking Without a Box,” set for 1 p.m. Sunday March 5.

  • Simon Friedman, Ph.D, professor at UMKC School of Pharmacy
  • Andy Hung, general manager at Uber Kansas City
  • Ciera Kelley, teacher at University Academy
  • Samira Zantout, pharmacy student at UMKC
  • Mason Wilde, computer science student at KU
  • Max Younger, co-founder, Mobility Designed

The organizing committee, headed by Co-Curators Ryan Sieli and Divya Igwe, selected the speakers because of their diverse backgrounds and “ideas worth spreading,” derived from their ingenuity and ability to “Think Without a Box.”

“Rules are intended to be learned, followed, mastered and then broken, so as to make way for the new rules,” Sieli said in describing the theme for this year’s event. “The past 25 years of American history have demonstrated the ability to create paradigms, settle into them and then see them shift dramatically. ‘Thinking Without a Box’ encourages its speakers and spectators alike to abandon the previous ways of getting things done. The box, and its metaphorical four walls, no longer exist.”

The event, now in its fifth year, will also feature a performance by local Indie-Pop band Rachel Mallin and The Wild Type.

Tickets, which traditionally sell out in advance of the event, are $8 each for UMKC students with valid student ID, and $16 each for the general public. Tickets can be purchased online and include access to the live performances, a T-shirt, snacks, refreshments and more.

The event will be on the UMKC campus in White Recital Hall, James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo. For latest announcements on the event, follow them on Twitter @TEDxUMKC or on Facebook.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TEDlike experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program but individual TEDx events are self-organized but subject to rules and regulations.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth spreading. Started as a conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with many initiatives. At a TED conference, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. TED speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert and Philippe Starck. Three major TED events are held each year: the TED Conference takes place every spring in Vancouver, Canada, simultaneous with TEDActive, in Whistler, BC; and the TEDGlobal Conference takes place each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
