UMKC has clear paths to the best careers in the country

Great news for students attending or considering University of Missouri-Kansas City. The school has many degree programs that lead to the 100 Best Jobs of 2017, including those for each of the top 10.

Each year U.S. News & World Report ranks jobs based on enviable work-life balance, salary level and job demand nationwide. Half of the 100 top jobs, including most in the top 10, are in health-related professions. The UMKC Health Sciences Campus on Hospital Hill is one of a few in the U.S. to have all of its health-professions schools on one campus for increased collaborative patient care, educational and research opportunities.

 

1. DENTIST

Median salary: $152,700
Unemployment rate: 0.1 percent
Expected job openings: 23,300

The UMKC School of Dentistry is the only public dental school in Missouri. More than half of the dentists in Missouri and Kansas received their D.D.S. from UMKC.

 

2. NURSE PRACTITIONER

Median salary: $98,190
Unemployment rate: 0.7 percent
Expected job openings: 44,700

The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies gets national attention for its affordable nurse-practitioner programs and has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the Top 25 five years in a row for best online graduate nursing courses.

 

3. PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

Median salary: $98,180
Unemployment rate: 0.6 percent
Expected job openings: 28,700

Before the UMKC School of Medicine started its Master of Medical Science Physician Assistant (PA) program in 2014, students would have to move outside of the Kansas City area to receive the necessary degree. And UMKC’s PA program is uniquely administered at a medical school, where future physicians and PAs learn side by side.

 

4. STATISTICIAN

Median salary: $80,110
Unemployment rate: 0.8 percent
Expected job openings: 10,100

UMKC offers several degree options in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This career is particularly poised to grow in the healthcare industry, and UMKC offers an innovative Master of Science in Bioinformatics degree, a joint program through the UMKC School of Medicine, School of Biological Sciences and School of Computing and Engineering.

 

5. ORTHODONTIST

Median salary: $187,200
Unemployment rate: 0.1 percent
Expected job openings: 1,500

The UMKC School of Dentistry offers a 30-month orthodontics program. An orthodontist is a dentist that has additional training in the correction of teeth and jaws.

 

6. NURSE ANESTHETIST

Median salary: $157,140
Unemployment rate: 0.7 percent
Expected job openings: 7,400

The UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies in collaboration with Truman Medical Centers has a 36-month Doctorate of Nursing Practice-Nurse Anesthesia program.

 

7. PEDIATRICIAN

Median salary: $170,300
Unemployment rate: 0.6 percent
Expected job openings: 3,600

The UMKC School of Medicine offers a Pediatric residency program at Children’s Mercy.

 

8. COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST

Median salary: $85,800
Unemployment rate: 2.4 percent
Expected job openings: 118,600

The UMKC School of Computing and Engineering offers degree programs including an undergraduate degree in Information Technology.

 

9. (tie) OBSTETRICIAN AND GYNECOLOGIST

Median salary: $187,199
Unemployment rate: 0.6 percent
Expected job openings: 4,300

The UMKC School of Medicine has an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program with rotations at Truman Medical Centers and Saint Luke’s Hospital.

 

9. (tie) ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON

Median salary: $187,199
Unemployment rate: 0.6 percent
Expected job openings: 1,200

The UMKC School of Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program offers two tracks: a four-year certificate program and a six-year certificate plus medical degree (MD) program.
