Gallery of Art Announces Summer Hours
Make no mistake. This isn’t a typical student art exhibition.
Inside the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Gallery of Art is work that has withstood stiff competition — and the critical eye of a Los Angeles art critic.
The 2012 Student Art Exhibition, which will be on display until July 28, highlights art by 41 student artists. The works are as varied and unique as the artists who crafted them. Paintings, photographs, multimedia, graphic design and printmaking pieces, ceramics, and videos make up the show that fills the Fine Arts building’s room 203.
The exhibit opened in early May, and was curated by Peter Frank, art critic and former Adjunct Senior Curator at the Riverside Art Museum. Frank is the art critic for the Huffington Post and Associate Editor for Fabrik magazine. He has also served as Editor of the magazine Los Angeles and Visions Art Quarterly.
Ultimately, Frank was most impressed by the work of undergraduate students Sunny Syarova and Colleen Lucas, who landed Best-in-Show for their collaborative video project, Delicacy.
Other awards were given by the Studio Art faculty. In undergraduate awards, Jason Carron received first place; Jessica Jacobs received second place; Christen Bowman and Kathleen Hoang were awarded honorable mentions. Kelly Powell received first place for graduate students, while Sara Robbins took home honorable mention.
The public may view the exhibit during the Gallery of Art’s summer hours. From Tuesday, July 10 through July 28, the gallery will be open Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.The Gallery will also be open for New Student Orientation on Friday, July 27, and Friday, August 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
