Community Open House is Nov. 30

The Kansas City Repertory Theatre opened the newly-renovated Spencer Theatre, located in the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s James C. Olson Performing Arts Center, just in time for the 35th annual production of A Christmas Carol.

Photo by Janet Rogers, Strategic Marketing and CommunicationsFriends and supporters of KC Rep and UMKC celebrated the grand re-opening on Nov. 20 with a ribbon cutting as stage personnel and actors prepared for the first student matinee and first preview of A Christmas Carol. De Le Salle student Terra Harris cut the ribbon with the assistance of UMKC Chancellor Leo Morton; Greg Graves, chair of the KC Rep Board of Directors; and officials from the Rep and The Hall Family Foundation.

Spencer Theatre underwent a $5.6 million renovation with significant improvements to enhance the audience experience. The renovations include the installation of new lighting and acoustic technology, a new stage floor, new carpet and chair coverings inside the theatre and 5,500 square feet of new construction, including new restrooms, second floor lounge and an expansion of the lobby.

Further upgrades include state-of-the-art technology for the lobby, permanent signage on the exterior of the building, enhanced sound equipment and new headsets for the theatre’s assisted listening system.

A Community Open House is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 30 from 6 – 8 p.m. The address for Spencer Theatre is 4949 Cherry St., Kansas City, Mo.
