Remembering Jake McGuire

(1974-2018)

Jacob “Jake” Delaney McGuire, UMKC School of Dentistry alumnus, faculty member and administrator, died unexpectedly Oct. 17. He was 44.

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday and services at 10 a.m. at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 9333 W. 159th Street, Overland Park, Kansas. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Arcola, Missouri.

“We are heartbroken with the loss of our colleague, teacher and friend, Dr. Jake McGuire,” said Dean Marsha A. Pyle. “Dr. McGuire was the most warm, kind, intelligent human being. Many have characterized him as an ‘old soul’; so humble, so caring, so dedicated and loyal to the UMKC School of Dentistry.”

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Deacons Fund at the church, or to the Myasthenia Gravis Association of Kansas City, 2340 E. Meyer Blvd. #300a, Kansas City, Missouri 64132.

McGuire joined the faculty in 2017 as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology and became its interim chair. He also was a research assistant professor in the Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences.

He received his DDS from UMKC in 1998 and completed an advanced education program in endodontics at the University of California-Los Angeles in 2000. In 2014, he earned a PhD at UMKC in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences and Pharmacology. His research focused on characterizing the organic composition of dentin-enamel.

“Dr. McGuire gave each of us so much hope and motivation for the future,” Pyle said. His legacy will carry us forward in our daily work.”
