New Letters magazine receives 15 nominations for Pushcart Prize

Fifteen works published by New Letters in 2009 – the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s (UMKC) international magazine of writing and art – have been nominated to appear in “The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses” (35th edition).

Nominations include Tim Johnston’s “Dirt Men,” winner of a New Letters 2008 fiction award; Marilyn Hacker and Deema Shehabi’s poem, “Diaspon/Renga, A Collaboration in Alternating Renga”; and Primo Ventello’s essay, “The Commuter.” Other New Letters nominees for 2010 include Charles Behlen, Tony Barnstone, Willis Barnstone, Mary Hower, Winfield Townley Scott, Tyler Caroline Mills, Robert Sims Reid, Teddy Macker and Alice Friman.

“To receive 15 nominations shows that New Letters remains on the front line of national magazines that publish literature,” said Robert Stewart, editor-in-chief of New Letters.

In 2009, New Letters became one of a few magazines to ever win three Pushcart Prizes – for work by Kim Addonizio, Edward Hoagland and Sara Pritchard.

“The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses” has been published every year since 1976. Each year, the Pushcart board of editors searches national journals and presses for their favorite short fiction, poetry and essays. Of those, 60 will be selected for Pushcart Prizes. Winners will be announced in early May and published in the Pushcart Prize anthology in November of 2010.

New Letters is available by subscription for $22 per year (four issues). Call (816) 235-1168 or email to order.
