The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Advisory Committee to the Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair in Continuing Education presents “From Meltdown to Bailouts: What’s Next?” UMKC economics professors Bill Black, Stephanie Kelton and Jan Kregel will discuss the current economic crisis and the prospects for recovery offered by the government stimulus plan, bailout packages and new regulatory initiatives.

Black, an associate professor of economics and law, has served as executive director of the Institute for Fraud Prevention; litigation director of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board; deputy director of the FSLIC; SVP and General Counsel of the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco; Senior Deputy Chief Counsel, Office of Thrift Supervision; and deputy director of the National Commission on Financial Institution Reform, Recovery and Enforcement. He has contributed to several national and international programs, including the Bill Moyers Journal, CNN, Fox News and BBC. He is the author of “The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One.”

Kelton, associate professor of economics, has spent much of her career analyzing public policy. Her primary fields of interest are monetary theory, employment policy, history of economic monetary thought, social security and European monetary integration. She has published widely on the Federal Reserve and central bank policy and is frequently cited for her work on government finance. In a forthcoming book, she examines health care in America.

Kregel, visiting distinguished research professor, has worked for the United Nations since 1998 as chief of the policy analysis and development branch in the Financing for Development Office, part of the U.N.’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Kregel has held many permanent and visiting positions in universities worldwide and has published extensively in the field of Post-Keynesian economic theory.
