$75,000 gift to Creative Writing and Media Arts program to aid graduate students

The Stanley H. Durwood Foundation recently gave a $75,000 gift commitment to the Creative Writing and Media Arts program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of English. The grant will support scholarships for graduate students. Beginning in 2013, the gift will provide scholarship funding to recruit and support three new students for their three years of graduate school.

The Stanley H. Durwood Foundation has been an outstanding leader in supporting higher education at UMKC and has provided significant financial support to the Creative Writing program. This support has enabled it to become one of the most respected university-based creative writing programs in the nation.

This success is the direct result of its interdisciplinary approach and the high-quality student scholars that UMKC attracts to the program. The Durwood Scholars program – benefitting nine students in the last few years – has played a key role in elevating the program nationally.
