Dugan, College of Arts and Sciences, named 2009 Student Affairs Honor Recipient One of 10 students honored for outstanding academic and service involvement

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management has named Layna Dugan a 2009 Honor Award recipient, one of 10 graduating seniors commended for both academic achievements and participation in programs outside the classroom.

Dugan graduates with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. A Dean’s List student and Chancellor’s Scholar, Dugan plans to work in advertising or public relations. She also plans to continue working with her chosen charities: Harvesters, Gifted Hands and the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency.

The honor award program was established in 1975 to recognize graduating seniors who excelled in academic achievement, involvement in university programs and service to the campus and surrounding community.

Dugan was the advertising manager for U-News, the University newspaper. As president of the Mercury Association, she increased membership by bringing in guest speakers and promoting internship opportunities. Other volunteer efforts by Dugan to collect food and toys resulted in 200 pounds of food, 25 warm coats and 50 toys to donate to the community.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UMKC engages with the community and economy based on a three-part mission: visual and performing arts, health sciences, and urban engagement.
