Division of Diversity continues its social justice lecture program

Event engages students, faculty, staff and community groups in discussion

KANSAS CITY, MO. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Division of Diversity, Access and Equity (DDAE) continues to provide initiatives supporting cultural social justice and inclusion. As part of these initiatives, DDAE brings relevant voices to UMKC by sponsoring guest lecturers who are renowned in the fields.

Jonathan Cohn – journalist, author and public speaker – will discuss his book, “Sick: The Untold Story of America’s Health Care Crisis and the People Who Pay the Price” at the fourth annual Social Justice Book and Lecture Program at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the UMKC Pierson Auditorium, 5100 Holmes.

The event is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow. Parking at the University Center and Cherry Street Terrace is free during this event.

“One of the goals of our office is to encourage students, faculty and staff to engage in their communities and work toward a just society that includes everyone,” said Kristi Ryujin, Director, Diversity Initiatives. “One way is through programming. This lecture will challenge opinions and views regarding the access to and affordability of health care in America.”

Cohn traveled throughout the U.S., interviewing individuals about health care, and he shares the experiences of eight Americans – who are struggling with medical care.

Cohn explains this complex issue at universities and health care companies across the country. He has been a guest on numerous talk shows, including “Larry King Live” and “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.”
