Opening Fall 2010. Where will you be?
When students return to campus in the fall of 2010, a vibrant New Student Union will replace the construction cranes and orange tape that decorated West Campus.
Students have outgrown the University Center, which was built in 1961 for a student population of 3,600. The New Student Union will provide more space as enrollment continues to increase and solidify West Campus as “the social core at UMKC.”
As the center of campus life, it complements UMKC’s strategic plan by focusing on student success. The New Student Union will house a variety of student organizations, provide technology-rich study spaces and feature striking views of the city UMKC engages through academic, research and service-work connections.
“The new Student Union was brought to campus by our students, for our students,” said Mel Tyler, UMKC vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment management. “This is an exciting project that will provide all students a place to call their own and is a major milestone in achieving UMKC’s goal of placing student success at the center of all we do.”
Designed to be LEED-certified, the New Student Union features the following:
- Food court, featuring Chick-fil-A Express, Baja Fresh Mexican Grill and SubConnection
- Retail space
- Student organization/meeting rooms
- Jazzman’s Coffeehouse with performance stage area
- 329-seat theater
- Lounge seating
- Gaming area
- 6,300-square-foot multi-purpose area
- Atrium
- Green roof terrace with views of the Country Club Plaza
