Children’s Mercy gets healthy dose of grants

It’s been a big week for Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics.

First, the hospital announced Sept. 4 that it had received a $5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund Dr. Stephen Kingsmore’s work with genome sequencing in newborns. Then, not to be outdone, the Hall Family Foundation said later the same day that it would donate $75 million for a new research building on the Children’s Mercy campus — if Jackson County voters approve a proposed half-cent sales tax to fund translational research.
