The University of Missouri-Kansas City College of Arts and Sciences‘ Department of Art and Art History will host Chickasaw-Choctaw textile artist Margaret Roach Wheeler on Tuesday, April 10.
Her lecture, titled “New Paths 2007-2012,” featuring a selection of Wheeler’s textile works, will be held from 5-6 pm in the Fine Arts Building, 5015 Holmes St., in room 208.
There will be an informal reception in the second floor hallway following her presentation. This event is part of the department’s Visiting Artists and Scholars lecture series and is open to the public.
Wheeler is an award-winning textiles artist and designer. In her work, she draws upon her cultural heritage as well as other tribes’ heritages that she was exposed to from an early age due to her father’s work as a school administrator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She was one of four Native American fashion designers chosen to speak at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York (NMAI) in 2011, where she has also been an artist-in-residence.
Wheeler has exhibited works in museums in Oklahoma, New Mexico, New York, Colorado, and Arizona. Formerly a high school educator, she is the owner/operator of her own company, Mahota Handwovens.
