Astronaut Sally Ride and Time Warner Cable invite elementary and middle school girls to explore science at UMKC

Sally Ride Science, Time Warner Cable Kansas City and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) are teaming up to inspire young women to explore the exciting world of science. The Sally Ride Science Festival will take place from 12:30 to 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8 at the UMKC Swinney Recreation Center, 5030 Holmes St., Kansas City, Mo.

The Sally Ride Science Festival will bring together hundreds of upper elementary and middle school girls, parents and teachers for a day of science and socializing. The festival features discovery workshops for students given by local scientists and engineers, as well as workshops for parents and teachers on ways to support students’ interests in science and math. The festival also includes a street fair with hands-on activities, booths and music. A highlight of the festival will be an inspiring talk by astronaut Dr. Linda Godwin, a veteran of four space flights with more than 38 days logged in space. Dr. Godwin was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., but her hometown is Jackson, Mo.
