Grammy-nominated artists rock the campus during Annual Spring Concert
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Activity and Program Council’s annual spring concert is sure to rock the campus this year. The concert continues the tradition of featuring music’s most popular acts by presenting two Grammy-nominated artists, Atlanta-based hip-hop act B.o.B and Denver-based, pop-rock act OneRepublic, at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 11 at the UMKC Swinney Recreation Center, 5030 Holmes. Tickets are $15 for current UMKC students and $30 to the public. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
With this lineup featuring two thrilling live acts, UMKC continues to set the bar high and is quickly becoming known for bringing prominent national music talent to campus for its spring concert.
B.o.B – a 22-year-old Atlanta native – has become a major music success story in the music world. The Atlantic Records recording artist, who began rapping at age 13, has a unique style that offers something not previously heard in the hip-hop world. Born Bobby Ray Simmons, Jr., B.o.B is known for his popular hits “Nothin on You” and “Airplanes (Feat. Hayley Williams)” – both platinum-certified hit singles.
In 2010, B.o.B released his album “B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray,” which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, and led to five Grammy nominations, five MTV Video Music Awards nominations, numerous BET Awards and BET Hip Hop Awards nominations. The multi-talented musician not only raps, but also plays numerous instruments including the piano, guitar, trumpet and French horn. B.o.B opened for Jay-Z and Eminem on their sold-out Home & Home Tour in the fall of 2010 and has performed on TV for countless awards shows, including a recent performance on the Grammy’s with friends/collaborators Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae. With his music used in recent commercials for Adidas and ESPN’s College Football Bowl Week commercials, B.o.B is an artist who will definitely be at the top of the music scene for a long time to come.
OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder knows a thing or two about crafting a hit pop song. He has worked with Rihanna, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, Leona Lewis (he shared a 2008 Best Record Grammy nod for her song “Bleeding Love”) and many others while fronting his own Denver based rock band, OneRepublic. In addition to Tedder, the Mosley/Interscope Records band includes guitarists Zach Filkins and Drew Brown, bassist/cellist Brent Kutzle and drummer Eddie Fisher.
The band has sold approximately 2 million albums and 8 million singles with hits including the 2007 smash single “Apologize” (remixed by Timbaland) off of their debut album “Dreaming Out Loud.” The song went No. 1 in 16 countries, going gold in 14 of them, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2008 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Other OneRepublic hits include “Stop and Stare” off of “Dreaming Out Loud” and “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” and recent single “Good Life” off of the bands second album “Waking Up.” Over the past several years of touring, the band has rocked sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden in New York, the massive New Pop festival in Germany, and the V Fest in the U.K. OneRepublic has touched millions of fans across the globe and the band continues to work hard to remain a prominent figure in today’s music scene.
