Pursuing a Dual Degree

Dual degree programs, programs in which you earn both a J.D. and an additional degree, are able to set lawyers apart from the competition in a significant way.  However, just like law school, the additional time it takes to acquire the degree and the costs incurred can be significant, so it is not a decision to make lightly.  Students should research, chat with advisors, and speak with practitioners who can shed light on the role of their dual degrees, to make sure the cost-benefit analysis comes down on the side of the dual degree.  It is important to seriously consider whether you are interested in a dual degree program as early as possible, since the time it takes to earn both degrees can be shortened significantly if you make the decision at the beginning of your law school career and take courses that count for credit for both programs.

UMKC Law offers a number of dual degrees that, depending on your career objectives, could be valuable tools to achieving your goals.  Each degree program has unique, extensive guidelines and instructions on how to apply that you should thoroughly research. Below is some general information about the dual degree options, which can also be found on the UMKC Law website: http://law.umkc.edu/academics/degree-program/dual-degree-options/. It is important to note that you must be admitted to both degree programs in order to pursue these dual degrees.

A dual degree program offered by the Law School and the Bloch School of Management is the J.D. and Masters of Business Administration degree (Joint J.D. /M.B.A.).  For lawyers who are interested in in-house counsel positions and/or business, this degree can be a factor that sets you apart from the competition.  Another dual degree program offered by the Bloch School and Law School is the J.D./Masters of Public Administration, which is targeted toward students with an interest in opportunities in state and local government, community organizations, and administration roles.

Finally, the Law School offers a joint J.D./Master of Laws Degree in Taxation (LL.M. in Taxation) for students wishing to be tax practitioners.  Like the other dual degree programs above, if you plan out your course schedule efficiently, many of the courses you take for your J.D. can apply towards your LL.M. in Taxation.

As stated previously, a dual degree can be of significant value, depending on your career goals.  Find an advisor, gather information, speak with others who have taken the path you are considering and individuals in the field you want to be in, and make a fully informed decision.
