This is Donut, the two-toed sloth. We met this cutie at a wildlife refuge in Quepos, Costa Rica. Unfortunately Donut was electrocuted on a power line and lost the ability to use his back legs. However, the team at the refuge are working hard to hopefully get his legs working again. At the refuge, a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, wildlife biologists and tons of volunteers work to rehabilitate and release Costa Rican wildlife back into the wild at Manuel Antonio National Park. I learned so much more than just wildlife veterinary medicine here and I would not trade my time here for the world. As they say in Costa Rica, pura vida!

Cross-Cultural Moments

First Place: Samuel Nelson

Living with indigenous people in the Andes mountains was an incredibly intimate experience. Sometimes you really have to leave civilization behind to connect with what’s out there. Pictured is one of the indigenous people I stayed with in Cafayate, Argentina, putting the empanadas we made in a brick oven outside.

Second Place: Amber Litteken

Philomena, an indigenous artisan, taught me to weave a traditional tapestry on a loom in Cafayate, Argentina.

Landscapes

First Place: Erica Prado

This photograph was taken at Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands. My study abroad group and I, stopped here during our road trip throughout Scotland during our last week in the country. The medieval castle founded in the thirteenth century, is considered one of Scotland’s most cherished historical sites. Its original name Eilean Donan derives from Gaelic, and means “Island of Donnan”.

Second Place: Christopher Shinn

Taken in Germany while participating in the UMKC Kempten semester exchange program

Portraits

First Place: Gabrielle Rucker

Photo taken in Shanghai, China while participating in the Alliance Shanghai semester program

Second Place: Alyssa Dinberg

This photo depicts a local resident walking his dog on a cloudy day in Lisbon. I really like the juxtaposition between the traditional cobblestone sidewalks and architecture and the modern yet relaxed vibe he gives off.
