UMKC COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate

1. Why is UMKC requiring mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for employees who have direct patient contact?

The vaccination requirement is deemed necessary because COVID has entered a new phase. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Delta variant spreads more easily and quickly than other variants, driving higher infection and death rates and putting significant strain on health care resources. Public health authorities and experts continue to advise that vaccination remains the best strategy for fighting this deadly pandemic.

2. I have a medical condition or a religious objection to vaccination and cannot take the vaccination. What can I do?

  • To request an exemption, please fill out the form for a medical exemption or religious exemption. If you have questions about exemptions, please contact KC Atchison at atchinsonk@umkc.edu. This request needs to be submitted by September 15 to comply with the UMKC mandate.
  • Individuals who are granted a religious accommodation or a medical exemption will be required to wear a mask.

3. What is the deadline for vaccination?

The deadline to be fully vaccinated is October 1, 2021. Please reference the below for vaccine timelines necessary to comply with the October 1, 2021 deadline. For those who receive the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, it is recommended to avoid day-of vaccination to circumvent unforeseen vaccine shortages.

Pfizer
• Timeline: Three weeks apart
• Latest date to receive first does: Sept. 10, 2021
• Deadline to be fully vaccinated: Oct. 1, 2021

Moderna
• Timeline: Four weeks apart
• Latest date to receive first does: Sept. 3, 2021
• Deadline to be fully vaccinated: Oct. 1, 2021

Johnson & Johnson
• Timeline: Single-dose
• Latest date to receive first does: Oct. 1, 2021
• Deadline to be fully vaccinated: Oct. 1, 2021

4. What qualifies as being fully vaccinated?

To be fully vaccinated under the mandate, you need to have either one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. You must have received either the one-dose vaccine or the second dose of a two-dose vaccine by 5 p.m., October 1, 2021 to meet the vaccine requirement. Note: the definition “fully vaccinated” under the mandate differs from the definition communicated by the CDC.

 5. How do I submit my COVID-19 vaccination documentation?

Upload your COVID-19 vaccination record in myHR. If you have questions about how to upload your records or if you have any technical issues, please contact Emily Strayhall at emilystrayhall@umkc.edu. This needs to be completed by October 1, 2021 to comply with the UMKC mandate.
