What is the Creating Inclusive Communities Project?

- It’s a resource for initiating conversations about diversity and inclusion.
- It’s a call to action, urging all of us to strive to create more inclusive campus communities.
Human Resources, the Office of Affirmative Action, and the Division of Diversity and Inclusion have collaborated on a project which offers our campus the opportunity for discussion and dialog that will help create a more open, inclusive environment. 21 individuals from across the campus are trained to co-facilitate sessions with faculty and staff across campus. Sessions can be on a number of topics such as microaggressions, LGBT issues, race and ethnicity, and more. These facilitated dialogues are not be a part of our mandated curriculum but serve as additional faculty and staff development. Sessions also serve as opportunities to provide a glimpse into the wonderful eclectic group of human beings that make up our community.
The overall objective of a Creating Inclusive Community session is to provide an opportunity for learners to view personal stories and perspectives on inclusive communities and to discuss ways to ensure inclusion in thought and practice flourishes on our campus. We are excited about this opportunity to engage a wider audience and build healthy dialogue across campus. Units can request a 1 hour Creating Inclusive Community session as part of a department meeting, team building session, lunch and learn or as an opportunity to engage faculty and staff.
