How to Join

Our fraternities and sororities bring in new members through processes know as recruitment or intake. Recruitment occurs in both formal and informal ways.

Requirements to Join

Only currently enrolled students at the University of Missouri-Kansas City are eligible to join any fraternity or sorority. Each organization has a grade point average and credit hour requirement specific to their chapter to be eligible for membership. These requirements can be found on each chapter’s RooGroups page.

In addition to these requirements, chapters may expect leadership and service experiences prior to joining. There is also a financial component to fraternities and sororities that all interested students should consider when participating in recruitment or intake.

Collegiate Panhellenic Council (CPC)

Primary Panhellenic recruitment is sponsored by the Collegiate Panhellenic Council and is a three-day process in the fall semester designed to give a preview of the four National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) chapters on campus. Students will have an opportunity to explore the academic, service, leadership, and sisterhood components for every sorority. All potential new members participating in the primary recruitment process must register and participate in all days of recruitment events. At the conclusion of the recruitment process, chapters will extend a bid or an invitation to membership, to those they would like to join their organization. Women will only receive one bid during the primary recruitment process.

Spring recruitment is informal and does not require a woman to register. Not all Panhellenic sororities will be conducting a spring recruitment or new member process. Students who are interested in joining during the spring semester should contact that organization directly using the public email address they have posted on RooGroups. Women may be offered several bids during informal sorority recruitment processes, but may only accept one.

Interfraternity Council (IFC)

Formal recruitment is the primary way Potential New Members (PNMs) join the IFC community. Chapters in the Interfraternity Council conduct a semi-structured recruitment process at the beginning of the fall semester. During the first week of school, the IFC Community will come together to host events open to any interested student to come and learn about what the community is like, meet new people, and have a good time! During the second week of school, interested members will attend specific fraternity-sponsored recruitment events. These events may include information sessions and events where brothers and alumni discuss the unique aspects of their fraternity and share personal experiences with prospective members.

Spring recruitment is informal and does not require registration. Not all IFC fraternities will be conducting spring recruitment or new member process. Students who are interested in joining during the spring semester should contact that organization directly using the public email address they have posted on RooGroups.

At the conclusion of the recruitment process, chapters will extend a bid, or an invitation to membership, to those they would like to join their organization. You may be offered several bids, but may only accept one.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)

Chapters in the National Pan-Hellenic Council (also referred to as the Divine Nine) conduct membership intake processes at various times throughout the year. All organizations governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Council have different requirements for membership. These organizations are permitted to conduct intake based on the chapter’s schedule and/ or their need for growth. Some organizations conduct intake each semester; others do so only once a year. When organizations are looking to conduct Membership Intake, many of them will host an informational meeting in which the criteria for membership is explained. Marketing is generally conducted through flyers, social media posts, and campus advertising one to two weeks prior to any informational session. It is highly encouraged that you review the national website before attending information sessions.

NPHC will host a general information session about all of its organizations for students who have questions or are unsure about the intake process. This event is called “NPHC 101″ and will be hosted during the first week of school.
