Organization Mission Volunteer Opportunities
Poetry for Personal Power A leading voice in the peer support recovery movement – health messaging, peer support, recovery mentoring via arts programs Board membership, training to become peer support specialists, sponsored artist opportunities (spoken word poetry, music, visual arts).
Cross-Lines Community Outreach The mission of Cross-Lines is to provide people in the Kansas City Area affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide tools for future self-sufficiency. Serving meals in the Community Kitchen, sorting and hanging in the Thrift Store, packing boxes in Senior Commodities, front desk receptionist, sack lunch preparation.
Kansas City Anti-Violence Project The Kansas City Anti-Violence Project (KCAVP) provides dedicated services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) youth and adults, throughout Missouri and Kansas, who have experienced trauma, violence, harassment or neglect. Through direct advocacy, professional training and community education, we work to prevent and respond to domestic violence, sexual violence and hate crimes.  Sorting clothes closet, organizing food pantry, file sorting, and assisting with community events.
Sunrise Movement KC The Sunrise Movement is a national, youth-led organization that is mobilizing an army of young people to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We are students across the country that take action to demand a livable future and an economy that works for everyone. Canvassing, organizing/participating in rallies/marches, talking to elected officials, art builds, social media, community outreach, voter registration, recruitment, etc. We engage holistically in local and national politics to build the people and political power necessary to win a Green New Deal.
Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes The Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes (PPGPV) mission is to encourage and protect informed individual choice regarding sexual and reproductive health care; to advocate public policies which allow and guarantee the right, knowledge and ability to exercise choice and gain full and nondiscriminatory access to reproductive health care; to foster and preserve a social and political climate favorable to the exercise of private, informed decisions about reproductive and sexual health. Campus organizing, canvassing, phone banking, workshops, writing, events.
Kansas Missouri Dream Alliance To protect immigrants’ rights and help our community. Community organizing, voter engagement, organizing the youth and letting immigrants know that they have rights.
KKFI Listener-supported Community radio in Kansas City featuring locally produced and syndicated public affairs and music shows, some of which focus on social justice issues. Both on and off the air collaborations as well as volunteering for and at various KKFI related events.
Community Housing of Wyandotte County To stabilize, revitalize, and reinvest in Kansas City, Kansas neighborhoods through improved housing and other quality of life initiatives. Community engagement, marketing, fundraising, arts.
Disabled But Not Really Foundation We’re on a mission to empower the disable community. “Don’t let your struggle be your identity.”Working with the Disabled and less fortunate communities of Greater Kansas City.
AIRR- Advocates for immigrant rights & reconciliation AIRR recognizes and is working tirelessly to keep families together and end the humanitarian crisis our immigrant community is facing. We believe that all people, no matter where they were born, deserve a chance at a safe and dignified life.AIRR is committed to empower and uplift the voices of the immigrant community and providing them with the tools they need to better protect themselves and their families.
Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault To improve the lives of those impacted by sexual abuse/assault and to prevent sexual violence in our community.Direct service to support sexual assault survivors in hospitals; community outreach events and speaking in schools about sexual abuse.
Lead to Read KC To improve third grade literacy by mobilizing community volunteers to read one-to-one with students in Kansas City-area schools on a weekly basis. Read one-to-one with a first, second or third grade student for 30 minutes between the hours of 11:30 and 1:00, on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
Shirley’s Kitchen Cabinet A nonprofit nonpartisan organization dedicated to amplifying the voices and power of Black women through education and advocacy, so they can be effective advocates for the issues that matter to them and the communities they serve. Organizers, Communications and Digital Media, Data Entry, General Support, Event Support, Open to other volunteer suggestions.
Missouri Jobs With Justice To build a coalition and bring economic, social, and racial justice to Missouri. Gathering signatures to qualify Medicaid Expansion to be on the ballot. Attending and assisting staff in running successful rallies and actions.
Moms Demand Action End preventable gun violence. Tabling, outreach, contacting reps.
League of Women Voters The LWVs of of Kansas City, Jackson, Clay & Platte Counties. Registering voters, distributing unbiased election information, and advocating for issues. Registering voters, studying issues in order to formulate positions, holding candidate forums, advocating issues such as voting rights, census, and a healthy environment.

Interested Organizations

In light of recent events around social justice and human rights in America, UMKC students have expressed a strong interest in becoming more involved in their local community; because of this, the EOA Conference is inviting community organizations that focus on education, women and children, social justice, and healthcare access. This is event is open to the public with a specific focus on reaching out to college students across the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan area.
