Brian Clifton (MFA 2014), and Marcus Myers (MFA 2013), have started an online literary magazine for poetry, flash fiction, and micro-essays. The magazine is called Bear Review, and its first issue is slated to be released in September.

Bear Review is currently accepting submissions through Submittable. Aesthetically, Bear Review is pretty eclectic—ranging from experimental to traditional, from free verse to formal poetry, from voice-driven to plot-driven fiction. Clifton and Myers both enjoy reading pieces that pay careful attention to language (through syntactic control, linguistic musicality, and concision) and imagery.

That said, poets who have wowed them recently include: Heather Christle, Jordan Stempleman, Gerard Manly Hopkins, Olga Broumas, Michael McGriff, and Hilda Doolittle. Fiction/non-fiction writers who keep their attention include: Amy Hempel, George Saunders, and Jessica Valenti.

Bear Review is looking forward to reading work from writers at every point in their careers and loves publishing established writers as well as up and coming ones. Clifton and Myers hope to see strong pieces from UMKC students well-represented in the magazine.
