This semester I’ve been reviewing books at the Kansas City Star as an intern. This is an internship that any graduate student in the UMKC English department can apply for.

I have been reading and reviewing one book of my choosing each week of the semester. The only other duties I’ve had there have been to choose the “Opening Lines” book–a paragraph from a new book that appears with a graphic at the top left of the A&E page every Sunday–and opening and organizing the books that flood in from publishers all over the country.

I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every part of this internship. I’ve benefited a lot from working with an editor on each piece I’ve written. Darryl Levings goes through my work once a week and explains what he thinks should be different and why, and has, once or twice, told me to rewrite the entire review.

This link should take you to my work on the Star‘s website. At least one review has disappeared, so I can’t be sure how long each of these will be available:
