After reading UMKC Today’s7 Tips for the Year Ahead,” we were inspired to share ways for our English majors and minors to follow their advice:

Be Proactive: Join Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society; submit your writing to Number One Magazine

Take Advantage of the Resources around You: Visit with an English Department advisor during open advising hours; pursue your research with a SEARCH or SUROP grant

Explore Kansas City: See a live performance of Shakespeare (MacBeth at the Living Room Theater or King Lear at the Spencer Theater); attend an author reading (hosted by the Midwest Poet Series, The Writer’s Place, or Rainy Day Books); browse the shelves at a used bookstore (like Prospero’s Books)

Make Friends with Your Professors: Get to know your professors during office hours—bring a specific question or topic for discussion

Enjoy the Small Moments with Your Peers: Meet up in the green space north of Cockefair Hall or at the tables inside

Make Connections: Stay connected with UMKC English through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

Don’t Be Afraid to Talk to Other Students: Meet other students at English Department events, like the Welcome Back Pizza Party on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, 5:30-8:00 p.m., at Pizza 51 (details on Facebook)
