The BRFSA hopes to serve as a supportive, viable organization within the university that is understood to be critical to the success of the institution in pursuit of its diversity objectives. BRFSA strives to provide a resource for the recruitment and retention of Black faculty, staff and students at the university.


The mission of the Black & Roo Faculty/Staff Association (BRFSA) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is to help foster a campus climate and culture of unity, equity and respect. The BRFSA serves as an advocate and resource for advancing the academic, professional, social and cultural growth and development of Black faculty and staff through outreach, mentoring, networking, community engagement and enrichment programs.


The vision of BRFSA is to achieve a visible commitment to the inclusion and recognition of Black faculty and staff at UMKC.

FOUR PILLARS/Programmatic Thrust:

  1. Administrative Policy Review: Provide leadership and support to institutional leaders at UMKC with a comprehensive and representative perspective on institutional policies, campus climate, and programs that affect Black faculty, staff, and students.
  2. Resource and Communication: Serve as an advocate, support system, and resource group for Black faculty and staff as we strive toward institutional goals of inclusive excellence at UMKC. To encourage the inclusion of diversity and equity as an integral part of the strategic plans of UMKC.
  3. Professional Development: Promote educational opportunities for professional growth and upward mobility for Black faculty and staff by providing opportunities for networking, mentoring and special cultural enrichment programs.
  4. Community Building: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, activities and social spaces that contribute to building community among Black faculty and staff in different university units, alumni, community groups and other UM institutions.
