Five Things for Faculty in Support of Students with Disabilities

By Scott Laurent, Director, UMKC Student Disability Services

As the new academic year approaches remember these five things about accommodations for students with disabilities.

  1. Students with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations under state and federal law. These accommodations ensure equal access to the learning environment at UMKC and should not fundamentally alter an essential aspect of a course or program.
  2. Please consider adding this statement to your syllabi. If you need accommodations for a disability, please contact Student Disability Services at (816) 235-5696 or disability@umkc.edu. You should contact them as soon as possible to establish an Accommodation Plan. For more information visit www.umkc.edu/disability.
  3. Please treat students’ disability information confidentially. People with disabilities are often subject to discrimination, stigma, and misunderstanding. Please remember that the information about the student’s disability and the accommodations provided are personal and confidential in nature and should be handled in the same way you would want your personal information handled.
  4. Letters of accommodation will be provided students detailing the required accommodations. We do everything to ensure that the student has a qualifying disability and that the accommodations are appropriate.
  5. If you have concerns about any accommodation recommendation contact us directly. We will be happy to discuss your concerns and address any issues. Please do not bring up your concerns with the student.
