Workshop Questions:

Am I required to stay on campus during my program?
Staying in the dorms is optional for Composition Workshop; participants who live or have alternative housing nearby are welcome to stay elsewhere.  Commuters will still need to bring money/food for lunch and/or dinner.

Are there any hotels nearby with special rates for participants?
Those wishing to stay off-campus will find many wonderful hotels in the Kansas City area. Hotels in the Plaza or Westport Districts will be closest to workshop events. UMKC does not coordinate any off-campus housing.

There are several nearby hotels that offer UMKC rates, including Extended Stay America – County Club Plaza (formerly Homestead Suites), Holiday Inn Country Club Plaza and Hampton Inn – Country Club Plaza. To obtain this rate, please call these hotels, mention your event, and ask for the UMKC rate.  Participants are responsible for their own housing costs and reservations.

I plan to fly into Kansas City – what do I need to know?
The nearest airport to UMKC is Kansas City International Airport (MCI).  This airport is located approximately 25 miles from UMKC, and there are a number of shuttles and taxi services available to transport travelers to campus, for a fee (typically $30-$50 per trip)

UMKC Conservatory Summer Programs do not arrange any airport transportation. We recommend visiting www.flykci.com to plan your trip to campus.

Will meals be provided?
Meals will be at the participant’s own expense and are not included in tuition fees. All participants should budget approximately $25.00 per day for meals (on or off campus) or pack food. Student will be chaperoned by the program intern during meals. See Traveling to and Staying in Kansas City for more information.

Where will participants be eating?
All participants under the age of 18 will be visiting local eating establishments as a group during each mealtime. Make sure to bring money or a pack lunch, as meals are not included in tuition fees.  Groups will be escorted and supervised by program interns.  This list may include, but is not limited to:

  • University Cafeteria – UMKC University Center
  • Chipotle – 4851 Main Street
  • Einstein Bros. Bagels – UMKC Royall Hall
  • Kin Lin (Chinese) – 314 E 51st St

Does UMKC offer wireless internet access?
Most UMKC buildings are outfitted with wireless internet, which can be accessed by a UMKC username and password that changes weekly.  At program check-in, we can provide you with that week’s guest username and password.  This username and password will allow you to log-in everywhere on campus EXCEPT the Residence Halls.

UMKC Residence Halls are equipped with secure wireless internet. Access is available everywhere on campus and can only be accessed with a unique username and password. Participants can purchase access to the secured wifi for $35. To register, please indicate on your registration form that you would like internet.  Your username and password will be provided to you at program check-in.

I am driving to campus each day – where can I park?
For participants who will be driving to campus each day, a weekly parking permit will need to be purchased.  These permits will allow one week of parking in designated UMKC Student lots.  To purchase a permit, please indicate so on your registration form.  Permits will be available to pick up at program check-in.  If you choose not to purchase a permit in advance, you may do so during the week of your program by visiting the UMKC Parking Office.  When available, permit fees are posted on our Registration Fees page.

Please note– Parking permits are good for UMKC STUDENT LOTS only, and your permit must be displayed at all times when parked in Student lots.  Parking in UMKC Faculty/Staff or Metered Parking lots may result in a ticket, even if your student permit is displayed.  Please read all signs carefully!  UMKC Conservatory Summer Programs are not responsible for tickets issued.

Do I need to bring towels/sheets?
Linens and towels (sheets, blanket, pillow, pillowcase, towels, washcloth) will be provided.  Please note, the sheets provided include two flat sheets; if you need a fitted sheet, you are welcome to bring your own.

Can my parent/spouse stay in on-campus housing with me?
We do not allow rooming with any non-participants (include parents) during this week.  If you have questions about this policy, please call our office at (816) 235-2741.

What’s the weather like in Kansas City at this time of year?
Summers in Kansas City are hot and humid.  University rooms and the dorms are air conditioned, but summer clothing is recommended.  You may want to bring a sweater if you get chilly in air conditioning.
