Ensemble Placement Auditions
We have a place for you to sing at UMKC! The placement auditions help us find the best fit where you will grow as a singer and enjoy making great music with others. Our choral groups perform a few times each semester in beautiful spaces. You could sing with the UMKC Choral Union, the Conservatory Concert Choir, the Conservatory Singers, or the Chamber Singers. Placement hearings will be held in Grant Hall Room 122 on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday before UMKC classes begin in late August. For UMKC students who are not music majors, you can enroll in the ensemble for one credit or for zero credit if you prefer. The UMKC Choral Union welcomes everyone from UMKC as well as alumni and community members. More details about auditions can be found here.
What happens at the placement audition?
- Informal conversation to get acquainted
- Sing a prepared solo piece of your choice…any style is fine and a pianist is provided to play for you. If you sang previously in an adjudication festival, you can sing a piece you know from that setting. Otherwise, just let us hear a song you know and want to share.
- We’ll lead you through a few short vocal exercises to check your range and a few tonal memory exercises.
- The whole thing takes about 10 minutes or so, and we contact you within a couple of days to let you know which group you’ll join.
We are always excited to welcome new singers to the UMKC choral family! Please contact Dr. Charles Robinson with any questions.
