Master of Science (M.S.)

The department offers a thesis and non-thesis option for obtaining the M.S. in Chemistry. A full-time student pursuing a Master of Science degree is expected to choose the thesis option. The thesis option has an emphasis on coursework and research. Students choosing to pursue the non-thesis option are expected to have an emphasis on coursework. A brief description of requirements for both the thesis and non-thesis option is given below.

Master of Science in Chemistry:  Thesis Option

The thesis option for the Master of Science in Chemistry requires a minimum of 31 hours of coursework and present a thesis. In order to complete a thesis, graduate students must choose a research advisor within the Department of Chemistry.  The subject of the thesis is chosen in conjunction with the research advisor and graduate student.  The candidate’s thesis must meet all the requirements set forth by the UMKC School of Graduate Studies.  Full-time students seeking an M.S. in Chemistry are required to complete the program within 4 years. Part-time students seeking an M.S. in Chemistry are required to complete the program within 7 years.  More information on the precise coursework and thesis requirements can be found in the UMKC Catalog.

Master of Science in Chemistry: Non-thesis Option

The non-thesis option for the Master of Science in Chemistry requires a minimum of 31 hours of coursework.  Full-time students seeking an M.S. in Chemistry are required to complete the program within 4 years.  For more information on course requirements please visit the UMKC catalog.
