It’s almost time! Every year, Helix Architecture + Design sponsors a design competition and scholarship award for our second-year architecture students. This year, the students are designing a community center in Lykins Square, a neighborhood in historic northeast Kansas City. Come sit in on the jury, or our Friday night show of work! Job Description
The Department of Architecture, Urban Planning + Design (AUP+D) is currently seeking an Assistant Professor of Architecture. The person hired for this tenure-track position will direct the first-year Environmental Design curriculum supporting the UMKC Architectural Studies program and the UMKC Urban Planning + Design program. UMKC’s Architectural Studies program is a collaboration with Kansas State University. Required teaching responsibilities include two semesters of first-year design studio and architectural history. Some opportunities exist in the Department to teach digital architecture to design majors and design thinking as a part of general education. Service responsibilities include contributions to program administration (such as advising, recruitment, and coordination with Kansas State) and work advancing diversity and inclusion in the design professions. Some preferred areas of research and professional practice include architectural history, design pedagogy, community design processes, and/or sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications
A MArch degree, progress toward licensure, work experience, and teaching experience. Our preferred candidate will have a passion for teaching design process.

The Helix Prize, sponsored by Helix Architecture + Design, is a design competition (and scholarship) held each fall for second-year Architectural Studies students. This year, the student were tasked with designing a neighborhood library in the Columbus Park neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri.

The presentations and jury were held on Thursday, Dec. 6, with an open house and presentation of awards on Friday, Dec. 7. Our winner this year was Joel Burford, with Honorable Mentions going to Reggie Collier and Trevor Smith. Congrats to all for all the hard work!

Rooftop Roundtable for Scholarships

Our very own Ted Seligson laying down some truths at the Rooftop Roundtable last night! The event was organized by the Kansas City Architectural Foundation, and also featured Susan Richards Johnson, Kite Singleton and Steve Paul (as well as 80 attendees!). KCAF does good work raising money for scholarships for local architecture students.
