What to Do BEFORE You Arrive

The first thing you should do when you receive your admission packet is READ IT. Please read all of the documents in your admission packet. There is a lot of important information about what to do before you arrive.

Get your visa

Contact your U.S. Embassy or Consulate to make a visa appointment.
Pay the SEVIS or DS-160 fee. This is the visa application fee. It is paid to the Embassy or Consulate. It is not paid to or by the ALI.
Go to your visa appointment. Make sure you take these documents:

  1. I-20 or DS-2019
  2. Admission letter
  3. Scholarship letter (if you have one)
  4. Financial guarantee or bank statement
  5. Passport

There may be other documents required depending on your situation; please check with the Embassy or Consulate for more information.

Arrange housing

Admission to the university does not guarantee housing. You must arrange housing before you arrive. If you do not have housing when you arrive, you will have to stay in a hotel. Hotels can be expensive. Visit our housing pages for  more information about housing options.

Arrange your flight

Make sure you check your start date on your I-20 or DS-2019 and find a flight at least one week before the start date.
Make sure Kansas City is your final destination. The airport code is MCI.

Set up your Online Accounts

Visit our pages about Setting up your Username and SSO, Setting up Email, and E-Consent Instructions to help you do this. You cannot do the next step until this is done.

Schedule your Check-In Session with ISAO

You must schedule a Check-In Session with ISAO. This session must be attended to complete the immigration check-in process. You will bring your passport, visa and I-20/DS-2019 to the Check-In Session. Go here schedule your ISAO Check-In Session.

Please remember that you also need to take the ALI placement test. We offer the placement test on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the week before classes begin. The test starts at 9:00am. Please do not schedule your check-in session for the same time you plan to take the test.
