Semester Start and End Dates
When does the semester begin and end?

When do I need to get there?
We recommend all students arrive a week before classes start to help you settle in and get used to the time-change.
You cannot arrive more than 30 days before the start date on your I-20 or DS-2019. USCIS will not allow you entry into the US.
I’m going to be late. What should I do?
If you cannot arrive until after the start date on your I-20 or DS-2019, you will need a late arrival letter from UMKC. If you need to arrive late, contact the ALI (firstname.lastname@example.org) to get a late-arrival letter. Without this letter, USCIS will not allow you into the country.
Will being late affect my class grade?
Maybe. If you are a returning student arriving late, you will not be able to make up any missing assignments or tests. Your teachers will expect you to make up what you missed learning on your own; they will not provide any extra help.
I took the placement test and I don’t agree with the Level placement.
Can I retake the placement exam?
NO. Students only take the placement test once. But don’t worry. During the first week of classes, your teachers will continue to assess your performance. If they decide that you should be moved, they will contact the Academic Advisor with the change recommendation.
I want to change levels. What do I need to do?
Talk to your teacher about changing Levels. Your teacher will talk to the teacher of the Level you want to change to. If both teachers agree, they will contact the Academic Advisor with the change recommendation.
I can’t register because there is a hold on my account. What should I do?
There are many different holds that could cause this to happen. Go here for more detailed instructions on what to do.
I’m having a problem with my classes. Who should I talk to about it?

Tuition and Money Questions
When can I pay my bill?
At UMKC, students pay for their bill once they have registered for classes. If you would like to prepay, contact our Business Specialist, Ms. Elisa Day, at firstname.lastname@example.org, for more information.
How can I pay my bill?
Students can pay their bill online or on campus at UMKC Central or the Cashier’s Office.

I still owe some of my fees. Should I stop going to class until I can pay?
NO. Owing UMKC should not stop you from going to class.
A new semester is starting and I still owe some of my fees. What should I do?
Until you pay these fees, you will not be able to enroll in class.
If you cannot pay the whole amount, the Cashier’s Office will set up a repayment agreement with you. You will pay a portion of what you owe when you sign the agreement and then you can register for classes.

University Health Insurance
I bought health insurance in my home country. Do I still have to pay for UMKC’s health insurance?
YES. Purchasing health insurance is mandatory for all international students. Waivers for this fee are only given in special circumstances. Go here for more information about international student health insurance.
What does my health insurance cover?
UMKC’s Student Health Center has someone who can see you for no charge. The cost for any tests or x-rays will be billed to your student account.

I need to go to the doctor and have not received my health insurance card. What should I do?
You can download a copy of your health insurance card from the Aetna website. For instructions, go here.
How do I get my student ID card?
Students can get their student ID cards at the UMKC One Card Office at the Student Union. You will need your student ID number to get your card. You can find more information about your student ID and what it can do here.
I lost my ID. What should I do?
Go to the Get Funds website to report your card lost or stolen. You must register on Get Funds before you can use the web site.
You may also contact the One Card office in the Student Union to have it deactivated. If you find your card at a later date, only your newest card will be active.
