For New Students

Pre Arrival Information:

Congratulations on your admission to the Applied Language Institute at UMKC!

We made a video just for our new students. Check it out below! All of the links mentioned in the video are on this page for easy access.

My UMKC Online Accounts:

Students need to set up their Pathway and UMKC email account before they arrive. This will allow you to register quickly and easily once you arrive.

When you were admitted, you received an email with instructions for setting up your online accounts. It looked like this:

You should follow the instructions in the email to set up your UMKC accounts. If you do not have this email, please check your email again, including your SPAM folder. If you still cannot find the email, contact to have it resent.

When you log into Pathway for the first time, you will have the opportunity to complete E-Consent. Students need to complete E-Consent before they can register for classes. If you need help, check out the instructions below.

Check-in and Orientation:

Your Immigration Check-in Session:

All F-1 and J-1 students must complete an Immigration Check-in session when they arrive. The purpose of this session is to tell the U.S. Government that you are where you are supposed to be. You must have your visa before you can schedule a session.

Your I-20 or DS-2019 can be cancelled if you enter the country and do not complete your Immigration Check-in session.

  • Full semester students, check your Slate/Future Roo account to schedule your session.
  • Short-term students, contact the ALI at to schedule your session with the ALI.

New Student Orientation:

All new and transfer F-1 and J-1 students (full semester) are required to attend New Student Orientation. The Orientation takes place the Thursday before classes begin. This is where you will learn about not only the U.S. and Kansas City, but also UMKC and the ALI.

  • Contact ISAO to sign up.
  • Degree level: English-only at the Applied Language Institute.
