ALI Student Advising
Types of Advisors
ALI students have two advisors at UMKC: an ALI Academic Advisor and an International Student Affairs Office (ISAO) Advisor. Each of these advisors can help you with different things.
Reasons to talk to your ALI Advisor:
Chelsey Butts
- Registration and Enrollment
- Tutoring
- Signature for I-20/DS-2019 extension (you must provide ISAO’s completed extension form)
Adam Shoemaker:
- Grades
- Concerns about your teacher or class
- Cultural questions
- Study strategies
Reasons to talk to the International Student Affairs Office (ISAO):
Katie Sylvester:
- Enrollment, Status maintenance, and FTE forms
Joyce Ward
- Employment, I-20 extensions, dependent additions
Morgan Ramsey
- Welcome Center, transfers, travel requests
Alex Spenner
- Sponsor liaison, J-1 visas, Orientation
Other, general reasons:
- Immigration check-in
- Visa/I-20 or DS-2019 questions
- Changes in your contact information (phone number, address, etc.)
- Questions about Health Insurance
When can I meet with my advisor?
Most of the time, you will need to make an appointment, even if the matter is urgent. The only time you can see an ALI Advisor without an appointment is during walk-in hours.

Walk-in hours:
- Monday 8:30-9am, 3-3:30pm
- Tuesday 8:30-9am, 3-3:30pm
- Thursday 8:30-9am, 3-3:30pm
- Friday 8:30-9am

Walk-in hours:
- Monday 2-3pm
- Tuesday 2-3pm (online)
- Thursday 10-11am (online)
- Friday 10-11am
